Gotta Step It Up

Motivation has been tough to come by lately.  Not sure what the deal is.  At least this week I added back the combat abs portion of the workout as well as some push-ups, but I really feel like I’m going to need something more rigorous before if finally drop 30 pounds.

Next week I’ll try to add back the bike to work (I had a lot of meetings, etc. this week) and I’m going to have to ramp up the a.m. workouts.

I may even start looking into some martial arts or other activities that would give me something more interesting to do and in a group setting where I can be pushed harder.

Coming back down

Okay, so the experiment went well.  I managed to avoid drinking Dr. Pepper for the whole week… except Friday night when we had some family over for root beer floats and someone also brought a bottle of DP.  Oh dang, I just couldn’t hold back.  One sweet DP float… YUM.  Okay, so, I pretty much stayed away form soda all week.  Consumption was down significantly at least.  I figure a weekend treat might keep me “on the wagon” anyway ;-)   So, this a.m. I stepped on the scale to find:

Weight: 216.6 lbs.
Waist: 40 inches

Improvement for sure.  Now it’s time to add back exercise and let’s see if I can make two weeks of progress in a row!

I’ve got a drinking problem

Dr Pepper Cans

Dr Pepper Cans

Okay, so anybody who knows me knows I LOVE Dr. Pepper.  I joke that “I can quit anytime” so I’m not technically addicted to it.  Problem is, it tastes too dang good.  DP is so good, that even if there are 10 other soda options available, but no DP, I can stick to water.

My soda consumption has been up over the past couple years from maybe once a week to several times per week, which I’m sure hasn’t helped the cause in the rapid weight rise.  Switch to diet soda you say?  Nasty.  No thank you.  Besides, diet soda is pure chemicals, so even though I won’t get as fat, it still wreaks havoc on long term health.  So, my argument is quit (or at least reduce) drinking soda all together if you want to improve health.

So, perfect timing for an experiment.  Since I just got back from a week of vacation and really didn’t feel like working out much, I figured this week I’d lay off the Dr. Pepper and see what happens.   Tune in Monday for the weekly weigh in and see what happened…

Dodged three hurricanes but couldn’t escape some serious damage on vacation week

Gustav, Hannah, and Ike were all missed us, but the real damage happened when I got back in town and stepped on that scale.  Up three pounds and half an inch on the waist after vacation week.  That’s the damage.

Weight: 219 lbs.
Waist: 40 inches

Back to where I started – almost.  At least I’m still down and inch and a half on my waist size, otherwise I would be more frustrated.  Was it the lack of exercise?  Was it the 20 plus cans of Dr. Pepper?  Was it the ice cream?  Bags of chips?  Popsicles?  Bags of candy?  Butter popcorn?  Cheesecake?  Hmm…. I’ll have to think about it.  I’m sure those must have contributed…

Well, in any case, I’m back and I’ve got a job to do: drop 30 pounds.

The pressure is on.  I’ve got to make some progress.

Is it possible to run underwater?

Well, this week I was wondering if I’d have the motivation to workout, since I’m on vacation.  The short answer is… NO.

That said, I did manage to go running twice with my wife.  Now, by “running” with my wife, the lady who recently ran a marathon and a half marathon, I mean I tagged along for some wind-sucking embarrassment.   Not to mention it was 90 plus degrees and 90 plus percent humidity – I literally felt like I was running through water.

I did manage to survive, despite sweating buckets and practically limping down the home stretch back to the house we were staying at but was rewarded with a dip in the pool to cool down and relax.

Ahh… it’s good to be on vacation :-)
