Save gas and get in shape!

Biking to work

Biking to work

Monday came and I had decide that I couldn’t delay any longer. I had to ride my bike to work.  I’m looking forward to the multiple benefits of biking… save gas ($), get in better shape, and I’ll be “stuck” at work, so I won’t go out to lunch so much — so, save more $ and improve health again :-)

Now, it’s a little tricky when you’re terribly out of shape and there is no shower at the office.  I’ve biked to work two times now (Mon and Wed) and had to bring a change of clothes.  It went better than I expected.  I actually *enjoyed* it.

I’ll try to do three rides this week, then ride daily except if I have a meeting to drive to or special circumstance (shoot for at least 4 days/week, plus a ride w/the kids on Saturday).

It takes 12,000 calories a day to look like Michael Phelps!

Apparently you CAN eat anything you want and be in great shape!  All you have to do is keep up the training and competition schedule of the best Olympic swimmer in the world :-)

Like I tell my wife, a body like mine doesn’t “just happen”… you’ve got to FEED it.  Unfortunately, I missed the memo on the intensive training regime that needs to be maintained to match the gross intake – oops!

Combat Abs review – it’s the only thing keeping the waist size shrinking

The bright spot in my first few weeks of training is that my waist has continued to shrink by half an inch a week.  I give the credit to Combat Abs by Matt Furey.

Combat Abs is a training program that consists of 50 exercises that are done primarily with body weight only.  The core of the program centers around the “Magnificent Seven” – a handful of ab firming movements that involve deep breathing, tightening, squeezing – basically isometric exercises and stretches.  The Mag 7 alone is enough to keep me busy for the moment and takes me about 10 minutes to run through.  What I like is that the exercises are simple and can be done without any equipment.

Is there a warranty on this scale?!

Okay, so the scale MUST be defective, right?  After another week of increasing the exercise, I’m UP again.  I guess I should be glad that this scale at least supports my weight and doesn’t break under the pressure of such a difficult task.  So, this week’s weigh in looks something like…

Weight: 217 lbs.
Waist: 40 inches

The bright spot again, is that I’ve got a third consecutive week with my waist dropping half an inch.  I shouldn’t expect to see big results so quickly, but that first week just had me excited.

New set of wheels – will it help my weight loss efforts?

My new Diamondback bike

My new Diamondback bike

Last Saturday I went out and bought a bike from Sports Authority – basic “entry level” bike, but hey, I’m not a hard core biker and I’m on a budget (speaking of, check out mint.com if you haven’t yet.  It’s a great online tool for managing personal finances and it’s FREE).

So the aspiration is that I’ll start biking to work soon.  It’s about 3.3 miles each way, which is a nice, reasonable distance for a bike.  My main concern is that I’m so out of shape still that I’ll be sweating like a pig by the time I get to work.  I’ll have to figure something out…
